Kieren leans forward to put helpings of food onto his plate, aware that all three of his family are staring at him, seeing as this is new behaviour for him, or at least, it's the sort of behaviour that they haven't seen in a while. He tries not to feel self-conscious, trying to keep his attention on Sirius as he speaks, immensely grateful that while not a Northerner, Sirius isn't an American either, which might have been truly awkward.

"Still not sure how we're back, or how I'm human," Kieren feels compelled to add.

"Let's not look a gift horse in the mouth, please," Sue pleads, reaching out to grab hold of Kieren's hand, his Dad beaming away at him. Even Jem looks fairly happy to see him. "You're here, that's all that matters, no matter what company you've brought 'round with you. You're here. You're warm. Kieren, I can feel your heart beating," she says, words hitching mildly.

"Mum," he pleads softly. "Please don't make me cry in front of my boyfriend."

"Sorry, I'm sorry!" she says, but she's tearing up and so's his Dad, which is embarrassing for everyone. Jem rolls her eyes fondly, but she doesn't look much better. Kieren gives Sirius an apologetic look, wanting to tell him that it's not usually like this, but it's a bit hard when it makes it look like his family's a soppy mess always when really, it's just extenuating circumstances.
