It's hardly the first time Sirius has felt he's done something wrong with Kieren and he feels an immediate press of guilt at the quiet admonishment in Kieren's tone. He clamps his mouth shut and glances down at his food, but despite the unease, the weight of Kieren's hand over his own is calming.
He glances over briefly, curious and worried all at once, before looking back to Kieren's mother. "Is it alright with you if I stay for awhile?" he asks, utterly polite and cautious. "With Kieren, that is. Upstairs."
A year or so ago, he'd not have bothered to ask. Sirius has long advocated for doing just as he desires with no need for approval of any authority. It's all a bit different now, however. He'd never really anticipated meeting Kieren's parents, but now that he has, he finds he wants very much to make a good impression. At least convince them he's a better choice than Simon.
