In completely unsurprising news, Kieren has discovered that Quidditch (like all the other sports he's attempted) is going to go on a list of failures. He winces as he cradles his sprained wrist against his stomach, walking home and wondering exactly how humiliating it's going to be to have to ask Sirius to repair it for him, what with the whole reason he's injured being that he'd been trying to become more magically inclined.

So to speak, at least. Using his left hand to open the door to their place, he works to get his satchel off his shoulder with twice the work it normally takes, inhaling deeply to try and rehearse his words in his head. Unfortunately, he has the feeling that the best way to do this is to be direct and get straight to the point.

"Sirius?" he calls out, grimacing when he tries to hang the satchel in the closet, the injured wrist twisting a little uncomfortably. "You wouldn't happen to have any healing magical potions on you at the moment, would you?"

Being back in Roarton doesn't feel like it could be complete without seeing the den again. He knows he shouldn't come out here because it makes his family worry, but if Sirius is right about everything, then maybe he's not going to be back here forever. Maybe he's only here for a visit and if that's the case, he needs to be here. He'd left a map for Sirius with Jem and then he'd headed out, standing at the mouth of the small cave for a long while.

He's not sure why, but it takes all his courage to enter, like this place is so steeped in memory and emotion that it's overwhelming, now. He crawls inside slowly, by the time he reaches the rocks where he'd done it, he feels ready to collapse, wishing he'd waited for Sirius to come join him. Here, he can see the etching into the rock, but Kieren reaches into his pocket for the knife that he'd brought with him. Below the RICK + REN, he starts a new one.

Halfway through Sirius' name, he sits back to wipe the sweat from his brow, determined to make this place into something more than just an awful memory of a boy who was taken from him twice, of a place where Kieren made a terrible decision, of a cave where he broke his father's heart. Going back to the wall, his eyes are blurry with tears as he keeps working, but he needs to, because he needs to make something different of the den, even if it's not forever and it's only in this strange place.

Homeplot #2

This whole situation is stranger than Kieren knows how to deal with.

The being home part is such a relief, even if it's not perfect (because even home hasn't got Amy Dyer, what with her being dead still), but he's got his Mum and Dad and Jem's here. The being alive part in Roarton is something to get used to, finding that people are still staring at him, though. He's used to that by now, but the truth is, he's sort of surprised that people are staring at him for being normal. It's like he can't win. Of course, that staring starts to get worrisome when people like Zoe catch sight of him, hissing loudly that he's clearly done something or made a deal with someone.

He wishes it weren't so obvious that he's alive, but then, cover up and contacts never really did what a warm beating heart can. The one complicated thing that Kieren hadn't really counted on and knows he'll have to face is the fact that he's got to see Simon at some point. The last time he had, before Darrow, he'd been telling Simon that he'd been glad that he's going to stick around.

If he's home for good, he owes him a conversation.

Heading up to the bungalow (having told Sirius to follow after, once his parents let him loose), Kieren braces himself as he takes in a shaky breath and knocks on the front door, trying to mentally rehearse whatever the hell he's going to say when it opens.

Homeplot #1

"Kieren! Wake up or you won't have time to eat your breakfast!" There's a pause, a long one, then a huff. "You know what I mean!" His mum's voice has always been present in his dreams, but it's never been that loud or stringent before. He burrows a little further into Sirius' warmth, reaching for one of his pillows to curl into when he inhales deeply and smells...that's weird. It smells like the pastels and paints he'd adorned his room with back in Roarton.

Blinking awake blearily, he glances around them to try and figure out what's going on, not sure why he's dreaming so vividly when he reaches out to find the clock and smacks his elbow on the nightstand beside his too-small bed. The bed he and Sirius have is nearly twice this size, which means that he's not dreaming, not given the sheer, sudden pain he's in from that contact.

"Shit," he hisses, staring down and finding Sirius right beside him. Frantically, Kieren pats himself down and presses a thumb to his neck, but there's nothing to be worried about. There's a pulse there, strong and steady, which means that somehow he's home and alive, but with Sirius here. Does that happen? Is this normal?

Leaning over, he rubs at Sirius' shoulder to try and get him to wake up. "Sirius," he whispers. "Hey, Sirius, wake up," he urges, hearing Jem down the hall complaining about having to be up for her therapy appointment.

Sirius - Post Alley

Kieren's still not entirely sure how he got home, but he didn't get a can and he thinks he'd run the whole way out of sheer, bloody, awful panic. He feels guilty about it all, too, because it's not like he could've controlled himself when he was PDS and that wolf, man, thing, it hadn't been able to, either. It's a scary thing to be on the other side, starting to understand the fear of the people in Roarton.

Still, Kieren's first impulse will still always be to help and not to hurt, not when there's been so much harm already done. He's still shaking when he gets to his and Sirius' place, his hands not letting him get the key in the lock for the tremors. Forcing himself to calm down, he takes in a few deep breaths and tries to look steady, even when it's the last thing he feels. If someone could smell him, they'd choke on the fear spilling off him, which makes him pray that Sirius isn't hanging about as Padfoot right now.

Setting his supplies down in the kitchen, he starts opening the cabinets to see if they've got any booze lying around. If any time is a time for him to drink, it's right now.

dated june 7th

Somehow, Kieren's lost track of time again. He'd been at one of the little art studios that offered lessons, curled up in the corner to work on his paint techniques. It's dark by the time he gets out, tucking his supplies under his arm as he digs out his phone to send Sirius a text to let him know where he is, apologising for letting the time slip away from him. The moon is bright above him, guiding his way through the dark streets.

He's got a bit of a hike to get home, but if he cuts through a few of the alleys, he can reach the bus stop and get the last bus before they stop running for the evening. He's still texting, grinning as he lets Sirius know that he's more than willing to make up for being late when a sound cuts him off. He doesn't drop his phone, but clutches it tighter. In the middle of a dark alley, Kieren starts to second-guess the brilliance of this plan.

"Hello?" he calls out warily, holding onto his bag a little tighter, both to protect it and to make himself feel a bit smaller. Fear pounds through him, seeing as now if something happens to him, he doesn't have his undead status to help him through the worst of it. "Hello, is someone there?"

It's there when he's coming back from getting groceries. All of a sudden, there's something very familiar looking looming outside of the Dimera Apartments and though Kieren wants to pretend that he doesn't know what it is, the shape of it and the plastic yellow tape warning people to stay away is something that pushes a chill down his newly sensitive skin. He can feel the dread as he nears it, clenching the groceries tighter.

Kieren's not sure he can even help how much he expects to see an awful sweater and Simon sitting on top of it, but there's no one there.

No one but his grave.

"“Gone is the face we loved so dear. Silent the voice we loved to hear," he hears Simon in his memory, thinks of the poetry that he'd rattled off the very first time they'd met.

And now, outside his apartment, there's a gravestone marking his death. He's alive again and human, but here's something reminding him that at eighteen years old, Kieren decided that he couldn't take it anymore and ended his life. Good thing he never got cremated, after all. Sitting gently down beside it, he's glad it's not Rick's grave, though he knows he might be tempting fate. Ice cream beginning to melt, Kieren can't exactly move, still trying to figure out what he even feels about all this.

I wanted to put up a quick explanation post here to give everyone enough background. Vague S2 spoilers for In The Flesh below:

Just like with Amy Dyer before him, Kieren has been going through a process of 'warming up' for the last few months. What this means is that for the last little while, he's been shaking, experience nosebleeds, memory loss, and has slowly been gaining sensation.

And with the post I'm about to put up, Kieren is about to go full-fledged human again, including his eyes back to their normal brownish colour, skin back to normal, and all his human functions back. Of course, this won't come easily. There will be a slight trauma associated given that he'll need a bit of a spark, but more than that, he's going to be needing some medical attention as all those old wounds that he had no problem with before are now going to become very real issues.

From here on out, he will be human looking and will be eating, drinking, etc. again. Please let me know if you have any particular questions or plot things, but looking forward to all the fallout!

It started twenty minutes ago and Kieren can't stop it.

His hands have been shaking uncontrollably and given the non-stop black blood coming out of his nose, it's led to a lot of the drops hitting the floor. The bleeding isn't new, but this much of it all at once is and that's sort of what's really scaring him right now. He can't stop shaking, he can't stop bleeding, and he has to wonder if the NTP is coming to the end of its usefulness. He thinks that this might be the end of Kieren Walker, PDS, and a return to full-zombie Kieren.

The panic is welling up within him as he thinks of hurting people and he knows that he can't do that. This feels like losing control, like Blue Oblivion, and it just means it's only a matter of time before he goes rabid.

He can't do there here in Darrow, not where people might get hurt. That's what makes the decision for him and Kieren bolts, leaving his place in a mess of blood droplets and tissues, heading out into the country on foot. He's too cowardly to end his own life, but at least he can look for a place to hide out until it all calms down and passes over.

And if it doesn't pass? Well, then at least there's a chance someone will stop him before he gets back to the city limits.

Something's missing.

Kieren can't put his finger on what's going on, but he has the strange, sneaking suspicion that something is happening. He shakes his head and goes back to his sketching, dabbing his fingers slowly with his thumb and frowning when he sees the strange black liquid coming out of his nose. He shakes his head and ignores it, going back to sketching Sirius without any of his clothes.

He smiles, faintly, as his thoughts turn to his boyfriend, still getting used to that thought. And more than that, the faint delighted prickle doesn't even feel imagined.

Maybe he'll call Sirius soon and invite him over for something, like a movie. There, again, is that feeling, like he's missed something big.

AU

Quite honestly, for about three months, Kieren just sort of figured his cat's been getting really fat. It's not like he should know better, because it's not like he'd ever had an appreciation for the animal arts when he'd been alive. So when someone had given Kieren a look like he's an idiot and commented that the cat's just pregnant, he doesn't think it should be his fault he hadn't noticed.

He hadn't even noticed himself coming back to life. How is he supposed to notice a cat?

He can notice, though, that the cat seems to be in distress and a quick check on the internet says that this is around the time they go into labour. Still, he's not doing this on his own. A touch panicked, Kieren fumbles around the bungalow for his things and fetches towels and an actual dropcloth, texting Sirius absently as he wanders, running a hand through his hair until it's wild.

Does he call a vet? Does he get a house call? Do those things still happen?

Kieren's not entirely sure what a person is supposed to do when preparing to perform a spell. Do you bring snacks? Do you plan with all sorts of emergency things? As it is, he's brought a pair of handcuffs and himself over to Sirius', thinking it best to do it where the other man is familiar with the territory. He swears that this is going to be right and Magnus seems well-convinced that it won't go awry.

When the explanations are through and it's time to try things, Kieren finds himself a touch wary yet, but he has enough faith and hope that he's willing to do this. Grinning at Sirius with a lopsided and fond thing, he waits until their guest has gone and takes a deep breath.

"Okay," he says. "How do we start all this?" he wonders.

How is it that after finally getting what he’s been after for so long, all Kieren wants to do is go back home?

Then again, a lot of that panic is due to the fact that one minute, Kieren had been in the washroom trying to give himself his injection using the mirror and the next, he’s in the middle of a crowded train station, as if suddenly his old wishes are coming true and he’s managed to escape Roarton and find his way into a whole new whirlwind. The trouble, of course, being that he’s got no cover up, no contacts, and is currently wielding his injector.

“Excuse me,” he says, as politely as he can despite his rising panic, jamming his way out of the station with his head down and trying not to make any eye contact. He feels like he can’t breathe and given that he doesn’t breathe, that’s a bit much. It feels like too much. Between losing Amy and his forced encounter with Blue Oblivion, suddenly having a mad episode and thinking you’re in a crowded city must mean something. The trouble is, he isn’t sure what.

It’s not really a side effect that they put in the pamphlets, is it?

Kieren doesn’t find any respite on the street either. There’s just more and more people, like they’re coming from every direction. His panic drives him into an alleyway just for a breather, clasping onto his injection. He reaches back for the hole in his neck, grimacing as he tries to align it. He hadn’t managed to finish giving himself the daily dose before he’d been interrupted.

And now he’s in an alleyway in some strange city, looking like he’s shooting up.

Strangely, it brings Simon to mind and Kieren almost laughs at the absurdity of the situation, only he has to be careful because if he moves, this is going to hurt more than it usually does (and it usually hurts a lot). It’s in the middle of this completely absurd and ridiculous piece of mad theatre that he hears footfalls at the head of the alley, because of course he’d be caught out like this.

Mindful of what he looks like right now and knowing he needs to finish this injection, Kieren keeps his head just slightly tilted so the shadows hide his skin and his eyes.

“It’s not what you think,” he protests immediately. “Really. I swear, it’s medicinal.”

Because that would be the perfect cap on a mad day – being carted off to the hospital or the loony bin for giving himself required drugs in some strange new alley. So here he is, in the hands of a stranger, and Kieren just has to hope that after all the really terrible experiences he’s had lately, this is going to make up for it all.

...at the stroke of twelve

Kieren's beginning to think that minding his own business is something of the past. It's not like Roarton had let him just exist, but now he's got doors to worry about. He's starting carrying NT-Plus around with an injector just in case he gets stuck, but even that's a dodgy thing considering Dr. Russo doesn't seem to be around any longer, not since...well, he doesn't want to think about it. The bungalow hasn't been safe because he'd stumbled through to his very favourite hotel-in-the-sky and home isn't much better. And trying to explain to his parents and Jem that there's a magical hotel that he can access through doors would probably only get him locked up again, so he's keeping this one to himself.

He's not even sure he's ready to tell Simon, quite honestly. It's a bit of a strain on a new relationship, saying that Kieren can walk through universes. After the whole 'I'm not special', he's pretty sure that one might backfire on him.

Still, he has to tell someone, because he hasn't just found himself in the hotel this time. He'd been warned about the doors, but hearing something is one thing. Experiencing it is a complete other and this one is...well, it's not exactly ideal. Kieren hasn't worn the contacts and mousse since Maxine's terror on Roarton, but he's not sure fitting in is his goal.

That said, standing just outside a door that doesn't lead back to where he wants it to, looking like the other zombies around you might actually be a win for once. Hands shaking (and Kieren not even noticing), he tries to breathe calmly and tell himself that rabid isn't contagious, that it's not automatic, and even if it were, he can fight it off. He knows he can.

Godmodding Information

It's important to know that Kieren Walker is a Partially Deceased Syndrome Sufferer. People might sling around the word 'rotter' or 'zombie', but the only thing that matters is that you don't mistake him for rabid. Kieren will be going around the hotel and other worlds in his au naturale state without contacts or mousse applied.

He has to take a shot of neurotriptyline on a daily basis to avoid becoming rabid, but as Kieren has very recently been reminded of what that feels like, he has no inclination to go back to that. He doesn't take kindly to anti-PDS discussion, but neither does he like hearing about anti-humanity talk. Please note that Kieren is not a pacifist, but wants to avoid doing any harm.

Kiss him and hug him all you like, but he won't feel it (not as he currently is). He doesn't eat, doesn't drink, and can only be killed with a blow to the brain.

Slowtagging welcome. Canon puncturing not. Currently, godmodding rights are unavailable to all.
